Discussion Board #3
One thing that Doyle did wrong was misinterpreting the evidence. He ruled
out the girl's ability to photoshop the photos. His second error was sending
an “ardent” believer in fairies to investigate. This is the type of person who
is going to believe whatever he hears about fairies. Gardner's perception of
Elsie Wright was that she was a shy girl who didn’t have the ability to photoshop
and he told Doyle that. The last mistake they had was that they tried to force
evidence. By this point, they should’ve known it was fake, but they got one photo
that wasn’t photoshopped and tried to make something out of it.
These women, like Conan Doyle, have all lost people close to them and are
most likely experiencing the same thing he did with the fairies. One woman
had fourteen children, two grew to be men and the same explosion killed both
of them. In both stories, people believe what they are told to believe. In Doyle’s
story, he was told that there were fairies and he chose to believe it the same way
that the women chose to believe there was a devil baby.
I don’t believe there is anything that’s scientifically impossible, anything we
can reach, we can research. With that being said, I do believe that we will never
know everything about outer space. There's so much more out there than just
us and it is impossible to know what all is out there.
How did life begin? One thing that nobody will ever truly know. “Many scientists
believe that RNA, or something similar to RNA, was the first molecule on Earth
to self-replicate and begin the process of evolution that led to more advanced
forms of life, including human beings.” (Terraso, David, “How Did Life Begin?”
National Science Foundation, 30 July 2010, P. 5). After research, I still don’t
know what to believe because this is beyond science and can never fully be proven.
