Why should anyone care?

As individuals, we tend to brush off big issues like climate change because we feel that

we have no control over them. One person can’t make a big change but that person can

help start the change. In “Why Bother”, Pollan argues why or why not we should care

about climate change as individuals. One of the reasons Pollan said we should “bother”

is because politicians won’t take big steps unless we do. To answer his question “why

bother”, I would say because it’s the right thing to do. Whether it works or doesn’t, you

should still try to fix the problem. Specialization is ruining industrial civilization. Without

specialization, everything would be fine in the world. We need to get rid of this standard.

What if it’s not specialization that is behind all of the problems? What if specialization is

the only thing helping industrial civilization? One thing that I can take from Pollan’s essay

is the way he used ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade the reader. He didn’t pick a side

but he uses techniques to almost make you feel like you have to “bother”.
