Station Eleven 13-26

“The rest of the island is mostly rock and forest, narrow roads with dirt driveways disappearing into the trees.” (Page 70). I like this quote because it uses a simple description, but still gives me a perfect vision of the road. It reminds me a lot of driving to my cabin.

“Thinking about a painting she left on her easel, a seahorse rising up from the bottom of the ocean.” (Page 87). The reason I chose this quote was because Miranda expressed interest in going back for this piece of art. I thought it was interesting that she wanted to go back to a place she didn’t want to be for this painting.

In this section, we learned a lot about Arthur’s past. We learn that he grew up on a small island of roughly 1,000 people in British Colombia. We find out that the way he got off that island was by attending the University of Toronto, which after four months he dropped out. He then began acting school in New York and after graduating moved to California with his manager. In California, he did a lot of drugs and partied a lot. When he was in his mid-thirties he ended up getting a role back in Toronto where he reconnected with Miranda and they hit it off. For Miranda, Station Eleven is her comic book project. It’s something that she does at work when she has nothing to do. She likes this project because she grew up loving comic books. Twenty years later, Miranda's comic book is what Kirsten reads all the time. It’s one of the only things that Kirsten has that she enjoys. After leaving St. Deborah by the Water, people from the traveling symphony start to disappear without any signs.

My perfect community:

My perfect community would be a mixture of older America and newer America. By this I mean that I would like to live in a world where everyone has the rights and knowledge that they have now, but we don’t have all the technology. I think that all the technology that we have now is bad for America. In my ideal world we wouldn’t have tablets, smartphones, etc., we would just have flip phones to communicate with others. We would still have tv so that we can keep up with the news and watch shows, but we would go back to when you could only watch your show once a week with commercials. The reason I chose this is because kids nowadays spend too much time on social media and games. Although some games have been proven to help with cognitive processes, too much of those games can be harmful. Another change that I would make it so that all livestock is free range so that the meat we eat is healthier for everyone. THe last thing that I would change is getting rid of all artificial foods and sweeteners because they are a leading cause of obesity. I believe that these few changes could go a long way in the world.
