Station Eleven chapter 27-41

“THERE WAS A MOMENT ON EARTH, improbable in retrospect and actually briefer than a moment in the span of human history, more like the blink of an eye, when it was possible to make a living photographing and interviewing famous people.” (Page 164). I chose this passage because it talks about how things can change over time but also in the blink of an eye. This passage really had me wondering what they were going to talk about next because the author could’ve gone to the past or the present time in the book. I also liked this passage because it sets up this part of the book to talk about Jeevan.

“He’d adopted new speech patterns. But of course he had, because since she’d last seen him there had been eleven years of friends and acquaintances and meetings and parties, travel here and there, film sets, two weddings and two divorces, a child.” (Page 206). The reason I chose this passage is because I find it interesting how much people change their speech patterns over time. Even over a couple of years, people will adopt new speech patterns from new friends and new experiences. I also thought this part of the book was cool because it brought us back to a couple of weeks before the night that opened the book.

My group and I have come up with a couple of choices for what we’re going to write for this project. One idea was that South Korea and Russia got into a disagreement causing nuclear warfare. After that, North and South America are the only countries left and they have to find ways to produce the products that we used to receive from the countries that are no longer around.

One thing that Jeevan realizes is how interconnected people are even if they don’t notice it. Everything that we do is because of other people. For example, we watch tv because people make shows, movies, etc.

In this story, memory is a source of strength because of all that they've been through. It’s also a show of comfort because it allows them to remember the times when life was better. There is another side to memory in this novel. The people who can remember the times before the pandemic often miss the past the most.

Before the pandemic starts, the majority of the people in this book were traveling somewhat often. After the death of Arthur, Miranda tries to catch a flight back to Toronto but can’t and ends up getting sick. At the same time, Clark tries to fly to Toronto but the plane lands in Severn City due to the Flu. Clark somehow doesn’t get sick and makes it out.
